- Summary:
- Like Madlib’s jazz creations, or the Dantean compositions of DJ Shadow, La Fine Équipe is a benchmark in beatmaking. Popularized by the La Boulangerie album series, this creative collective is as immersed in hip-hop as it is in electro. They remain unmatched in the domain of rhythm machines and sampling, as evidenced by their talent and success. Their varied compositions demonstrate masterful turntablism, meaning the use of turntables to manipulate sounds and create new music and rhythms. Filmed in 2020 as part of the Fête de l'Humanité, held at the futuristic headquarters of the French Communist Party designed by architect Oscar Niemeyer, La Fine Equipe sets the tone right from the opening track. Vintage synthy layers are distorted by a heavy rhythm, and sampled voices respond to rap gimmicks such as the famous “Sound Of Da Police” by rapper KRS One. In turns melodic (a little) and percussive (a lot), the group is unrivaled when it comes to remixing sound material. The digital samples are skillfully bound together with keyboards and drum machines. This incredible live performance always keeps the dance floor and audience in mind. The proof is in “Maluca,” a colorful track packed with powerful sound effects. Vincent Caffiaux
