Summary:
Directors Elodie Maillot and Arno Bitschy take a deep dive into the complex roots and traditions that make up the DNA of New Orleans. The opening scene of their fascinating documentary pictures a man using dental floss to sew sequins onto a Mardi Gras costume. We can hear and see a violent scene play out on his television in the background. These first few seconds give us a figurative glimpse into the nature of NOLA, the cradle of modern music. Indeed, the Mardi Gras in New Orleans has always been an expression of identity, of opportunist craftsmanship, and of musical joy despite having developed against a background of oppression. Two figures help us to make sense of what we are watching: the first, Big Chief Jermaine, illuminates the so-called Mardi-Gras Indian culture; the second, Ha Sizzle, represents newer generations, shedding light on the burgeoning "bounce" electronic scene that continues the legacy of New Orleans cross-pollination. Produced by Jarring Effects, this is a film that makes the ordinary extraordinary – typical of the independent music house who always seek to champion non-conformist musical expression.
