- Summary:
- Who knew that the saxophone could produce such a fluttering, vulnerable sound, and yet remain so powerful? Here, at the 2016 Paris Jazz Festival, Sylvain Rifflet demonstrates as such in an opening that feels like a striking Shakespearean prologue: he stands, dressed in a flamboyant red coat, delivering a lightning-quick, spiralling address. At times, we can even hear the sound of his fingers coming down on the saxophone’s keys above the noise of his playing; it is an exercise in control and restraint. Then, the acclaimed saxophonist, who has won multiple European awards, leads out a stellar line up. He forms part of a front three alongside the dazzling Joce Mienniel and Philippe Gordiani (on flute and guitar respectively). Behind them sits percussionist Benjamin Flament, whose set up looks like a treasure trove, employing all kinds of shiny paraphernalia for the production of different timbres. As a group, they start softly, before building a swell of color and texture whose intricate motifs spin and fold in kaleidoscopic shifts. One of Rifflet’s main saxophone idols is Stan Getz, from whom he draws influences as varied as minimalism, use of repetition, rupture, brutism and, sometimes, trance. All of it is laid bare in this fabulous performance. Rowan Standish Hayes
