- Summary:
- "I have to be real. If John Coltrane was informed by his father being a preacher, I had to do the same thing. Lee Morgan brought gospel and I’m bringing Sephardic synagogue music. This is who I am." This statement demonstrates the earnestness and the audacity of young trumpeter and composer, Itamar Borochov. Indeed, the Israeli left his native Jaffa, a Jewish-Christian-Muslim melting pot, for the New York scene where he has quickly established himself as one to watch (especially since 2019’s release of Blue Nights). But while his influences reflect the cultural diversity of his background – ranging from Prince to Weather Report to Edith Piaf to the jazz greats – his music most strongly relates to his faith. He sees his entry into the local Sephardic Synagogue, with its Arabic scales and secular Jewish melodies, as the cornerstone of his formation. Here, he is joined by fellow countrymen Ziv Ravitz on drums and Yoni Zelnik on double bass, as well as by Italian pianist Alessandro Lanzoni. Together, they bring a fresh range of traditions to the classic jazz quartet. Rowan Standish Hayes
