Summary:
Make no mistake about this Australian musician who has been ravaging stages around the world for many years. John Butler, with his Don Juanian look (half-surfer, half-bohemian) is not a simple singer-guitarist-poser who has found the recipe for seduction. Those who have followed this power trio since the early 2000s surely know it and may even have been mesmerized when they discovered them…on stage. It's true that we may find his studio recordings a little too polished and, let's face it, predictable. If there is nothing to complain about his compositions which navigate in a folk-funk-blues-rock universe with occasional pop accents, they do not systematically move us since Ben Harper, G.Love and Dave Matthews had already gone through similar paths before the emergence of the John Butler trio. In the intimacy of this Strasbourg venue, it’s a completely different story that is being told. Disconcerting virtuosity, improvisation, communication with the public, unbridled rock and folk and even echoes of blues all on a twelve-string slide guitar which is being mistreated for our greater good. John Butler is on all fronts! I’m kicking at an open door, but it is invariably on stage that you have to discover this kind of musician. Supported by his faithful companions, you discover that if Butler is not a unique case, he is definitely a special case whose concerts are generally sold out. Take that as a sign. Julien D.
