- Summary:
- The new Maloya generation turns up the volume. Like a handful of other names that have appeared in recent years such as Anna O'Aro, Lindigo, Trans Kabar, Christiane Salem and Zanmari Baré ... A flock of young Reunionese artists is taking the island's secular musical to new horizons. Maya Kamaty already has two albums in the bag and is relentlessly pushing the boundaries. She operates between respect for heritage and the desire to explore, which is specific to this generation who grew up in the great musical melting pot of the world. For this intimate concert, Kamaty's undulating and polyglot voice (French, English, Creole) blends admirably with the electronic resonance unspooled live by the brilliant musicians who accompany her. At the heart of this clever mix of delicacy, intoxication and electro-dub textures, emerges the very essence of Maloya: a statement of strong musical identity punctuated by the magic of the kayamb, a percussion instrument that is emblematic of Reunion Island. It symbolises, once again, the fruitful link between generations of musicians of this small island in the Indian Ocean, a small piece of land that has grown great for its culture and, as far as we are concerned here, for its music. So special, radiant and ever-green (contemporary arrangements build on traditions), the heady scent of Maloya remains fundamentally original and always fascinating. Julien D
