- One was born in 1938 (Charles Lloyd, saxophone, flute and taragot, a kind of clarinet of Hungarian origin), the other in 1975 (Jason Moran), but the empathy between the two is such that the generational difference doesn’t matter at all. How can one express the immense pleasure taken in listening to this concert whose minimalist formula becomes the key to intelligence in movement and awakened sensitivity? This dialogue between an "old master," herald of a colorful, expressive and adventurous music and a partner who carries within him the whole history of music, from Fats Waller’s stride to Monkian utterances, from lyricism to the hoarseness of contemporary sounds, is a lesson in smiling serenity in the form of asceticism (Charles Lloyd, keen on transcendental meditation said: "I have always been in search of sound which will transform the universe and change molecules"). Between a sensual opening with a calypso sway (Dorotea's Studio) and the meditative approach of "The Blessing", between the incisive rereading of the famous score "Forest Flower" (played in 1966 with Keith Jarrett, Jack DeJohnette and Cecil Mc Bee) and the escape to the borders of a free jazz mixed with folk influences, there is "Go Down Moses" to remind us of the timelessness of the music’s origins. In fact, each note, each exchange between the two artists, all Jason Moran’s free improvisations with a density of touch that amazes us, carry the memory of jazz. And it is simply fascinating.
