Summary:
Tango for Astor is a documentary that responds to Richard Galliano's desire to keep a record of his tribute to Astor Piazzolla, the master he met in the 1980s and who was always ready to give him advice. All the ingredients are there to make this concert and documentary, directed by Frank Cassenti, a complete success: an inventive reading of Astor Piazzolla's music, the presence of renowned musicians from the world of classical music (Jean-Marc Philips - Varjabedian on first violin, cellist Henri Demarquette, to name but two) and jazz (pianist Hervé Sellin), and a pair of top-flight dancers. Astor Piazzolla's (1921 - 1992) music fascinates audiences and musicians alike with its obsessive dimension, unheard-of tension and internalized tragedy. By building a bridge with jazz and classical music, it goes beyond the codes of the tango imagination, without denouncing tradition, since it retains its foundations in terms of timbres (violins, piano, bandoneon, strings) and pulsation. Because it leaves room for interpretative freedom, artists like to confront and appropriate it. Just listen to the septet's versions of Oblivion, Milonga del Angel and Sur for proof. Philippe Lesage
