- Summary:
- The starting point for this documentary is a simple question that the director seemingly asks himself: can music change the world? Of course, we're tempted to answer in the affirmative, given the incredible diversity of talented musicians featured in this film. The film attempts to bring them together, experiment with new approaches and engage in brilliant musical conversations. With maestro Archie Shepp as master of ceremonies (and the documentary's common thread), the approach is also the fruit of a personal reflection by director Frank Cassenti, who summons up his memories and takes us on a whirlwind tour of a wide range of music, its history and what it evokes. Jazz, African music, rhythms of all kinds, polyglot songs, this succession of testimonies (musical or otherwise) was mainly produced during the Jazz à Porquerolles festival, of which Cassenti is also the director/instigator. It's a magnificent setting and an event that seems almost like a family gathering for artists with a broad mind and ears wide open to the world. Alongside the majestic Archie Shepp, we encounter Vincent Ségal, Marc Ribot, Lula Pena, André Minvielle, Aldo Romano, Juan Cédron and his legendary quartet, and the South Africans of B.C.U.C. (and their vigorous performances), to name but a few. Fortunately, the list doesn't end there. And so, from concert highlights to interviews, from jam sessions to rehearsals, from musical interludes to encounters and collaborations, images, music and all the rest intermingle to satisfy the need for the headiness that music sometimes offers... while we wait for the world to change, if only a little.
