- Summary:
- This is a concert spotlighting the brilliant guitarist John McLaughlin in two different settings. The show at Philharmonic Gasteig in 1989’s Münchner Klaviersommer in Munich is split into two parts, both with McLaughlin playing an acoustic cutaway. Part one features renowned French classical pianist/improviser Katia Labèque joining McLaughlin in two improvisational laced numbers. The pair — romantically involved with each other at the time since the pianist joined the guitarist’s Translator band in 1981 — trade moving solos on two songs: "Brise de coeur" and "Montana" before leaving the stage to the roaring crowd’s approval. Then the stage fills up with the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Victor Pablo Perez who leads his band in support of the guitar legend’s solo runs on such pieces as "The Mediterranean." This concert appears to be the ramp up to McLaughlin’s 1990 album Concerto for Guitar and Orchestra: The Mediterranean with Michael Tilson Thomas conducting the London Symphony Orchestra. For this concert, however, too bad a few more fetching duos weren’t delivered. Dan Ouellette
