- Summary:
- Hermeto Pascoal concerts are always kaleidoscopic sonic parties, ones that transport us somewhere a little warmer, freer and more vibrant. Here, at the Moods Club in Zurich, the Octogenarian is joined by his regular band, which includes his son, the composer and percussionist, Fabio Pascoal. Together, the group has become a staple in global avant-garde music, delivering Hermeto's vision to the masses. It was back in the 1930s that his musical journey began. Born with Albinism in North-Eastern Brazil, Hermeto was confined to the house while his relatives worked in the fields, and spent his time away from the heat, playing on his father's accordion. Over eight decades and countless instruments later, he is now the symbol of Brazilian musical flair, having rewritten the rule book several times over. For viewers, there is only one rule when experiencing Hermeto's performances: to let go. Though, at times, the melody might feel elusive, all of Pascoal's compositions are richly embedded with dazzling harmonics and a sense of joy, especially after a few listens. Particular highlights include his famous use of a teapot as a horn and Fabio's sheer eclecticism in the creation of his rhythms. Rowan Standish Hayes
