- Summary:
- The mother of neo-soul, who has continuously reinvented herself since *Plantation Lullabies* in 1993, Meshell Ndegeocello remains a rare bird on the American musical landscape, inspiring the Bilals and Solanges of this world to play with her shaded phrasing. A bassist, singer and woman of sensuous, minimalist, cathartic funk, playing with all the nuances of Great Black Music, with the chiaroscuro tones of her voice, she delivers concentrated groove against a background of obsessively haunting distortions and patterns. For the 33rd annual Banlieues Bleues Festival, she presents the repertoire of *Comet, Come to Me* (2014), including Forget My Name, but without neglecting some poignant covers of songs by her iconic favorites, like Nina Simone and Leonard Cohen. An essential concert. Jeanne Lacaille
