- Summary:
- This documentary, which maintains a very nuanced perspective throughout, showcases the unions that were prompted during the Morgenland Festival in 2010. As the Syrian composer and musicologist Nouri Iskandar points out, this festival has two objectives: to create new musical encounters, and to promote the music of Eastern countries where a common cultural heritage lies at the crossroads of Byzantine, Ottoman, Christian, Aramaic, Persian and Arab civilizations. The vocals are majesical, especially on long improvisations, and they are carried by traditional instruments and percussion, sometimes by the Morgenland Chamber Orchestra, or the Uzbek Yulduz Turdieva Enseble. In addition to the fantastic Iranian percussionist Harir Shariatzadeh, here, we are introduced to the Iranian Persian classical music specialist Salar Aghili as well as the Syrian of Armenian descent Brahim Keivo on vocals and various lutes (oud, baghlama). But it is above all the Azerbaijani singer Alim Qasimov and his daughter Fargana who capture attention with their fascinating interpretations of mugham (learned music) and traditional music; their accompanists are playing târ, kamânche and daf.
