- Summary:
- Performed onstage at the Jazz à Junas festival, Antonio Sanchez’s Meridian Suite impresses with the complexity of its architecture and the precision of its performance. The drummer has taken on special status since his solo music in Alejandro González Iñárritu’s film, Birdman, won the general public’s favor in 2014. Nevertheless, he didn’t cut himself off from the jazz community that knew him as a sideman with Pat Metheny, Chick Corea, and Avishai Cohen. Especially since he remained extremely demanding, both in terms of his instrumental virtuosity and also as a leading composer. Thus *Meridian Suite*, the title of his 2015 album, is an ambitious construction exploring the concept of meridians, defined by Sanchez as "imaginary lines crossing the globe, the celestial sphere, and our bodies." In five successive parts over nearly an hour, the suite plays with the repetition of motifs, tensions, and releases. Sometimes powerful or delicate, but intense all the time, the leader fully highlights the members of his group, Migration, where we see the best of New York jazz. Besides the impeccable Matt Brewer (bass and double bass), John Escreet excels on the Fender Rhodes, while saxophonist Seamus Blake offers electronic effects on an Akai EWI 5000 in addition to doubling up on harmonies with songstress Thana Alexa (Antonio Sanchez’s wife). The last part, Pathway of the Mind, developed over more than 26 epic minutes, is absolutely stunning. Eric Delhaye
