Summary:
Concerts by the octogenarian albino Hermeto Pascoal are like pagan festivals with a signature use of everyday objects to create unusual sounds. The little pink pigs of the percussionist and the version of "Round Midnight" played on a kettle (with a trumpet’s mouthpiece attached) make for playful illustrations without blunting the intelligence of improvisations, compositions and arrangements. On a framework of themes, phrases and rhythms that happily draw on the musical genres of the Brazilian Nordeste, Hermeto's stage performances are centered around the mood of the moment, sharp humor and interactions with the audience. While the whole thing threatens to turn into a circus act, this small grain of madness never fails to ignite a musical verve that sends everything drifting towards timeless imaginary folklore.
