- Summary:
- Bonga, a leading figure in Portuguese-speaking music – and especially in Angolan semba – performs here on the stage of the Vienna Jazz Festival in 2019. Since 2000, with the Lusafrica label in Paris, Bonga has been continually releasing albums and performing concerts. With more than thirty LPs to his credit, he appeals to older and younger audiences alike. Perhaps it’s his hoarse, broken voice – identifiable from the very first notes – that reaches the depths of our souls; or maybe it’s the energy, warmth and good humour that emanates from him. Whatever the case, Bonga hypnotises crowds, getting them to dance to his voice inflections, delicate harmonies and rhythms. A composer, singer and performer, with his dikanza in hand, Bonga and his accompanyists draw us into a whirlwind of joys and sorrows. His is a piercing voice you’ll never forget once you’ve heard it.
