- Summary:
- We head to South Africa to celebrate Black History Month. In February Qwest TV, in partnership with Beatport and Bridges for Music, co-organised a series of live concerts in Johannesburg at Constitution Hill, the prison where, among others, Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Gandhi were incarcerated. Today, reconverted into a museum, it allows visitors to remember South Africa's long path to democracy and houses the Constitutional Court. Originally from Johannesburg, DJ Buhle plays from her home at the top of a hill, overhanging a few blocks of flats where she has set up her turntables outside to give us a set of straight deep house to benefit the education project Bridges for Music. Raised in the township of Soweto, a poor non-white neighborhood, DJ Bhuhle is well positioned to commemorate this Black History Month and remind us to how deeply African culture has influenced contemporary electronic music. Throughout her minimalist rhythmic lines, we can also hear accents of soul jazz that warm the body and the soul, winking at these shared roots. Etienne Geremia
