- Summary:
- The second part of the 1960 Live at Pleyel Paris concert, also around thirty minutes long, is nothing but an explosion of delightful melodies, some from “Gillespiana,” a series of themes composed by both Lalo Schifrin (an 88-year-old Argentinian composer) and Dizzy Gillespie, and others, pure improvisations — the core of jazz music. The horn players, some of the best jazz has ever known, are Dizzy Gillespie (trumpet), Coleman Hawkins (tenor saxophone), David Roy Eldridge (trumpet), Benny Carter (alto saxophone) and Don Byas (tenor saxophone). Lalo Schifrin (piano), Jo Jones (drums) and Sam Jones (bass) constitute the rhythm section. The concert ends with a magnificent solo of Cuban percussionist Candido Camero (bongo), known for his contributions to the development of mambo and Afro-Cuban jazz. Candido is alive at 99 years old and could still produce terrific solos a few years ago. Emilie Pons
