Summary:
Roughly thirty minutes long, the 1960 Live at Pleyel, Paris - Part 1 concert features four giants, who also happen to be four swing experts. In order of appearance, we have composer and arranger J.J. Johnson (trombone), from Indianapolis; Stan Getz (tenor saxophone), the king of bossa nova music; Julian Edwin “Cannonball” Adderley (alto saxophone), known for his rendition of Joe Zawinul’s 1966 composition “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy;” and Cannonball’s brother, Nat Adderley (trumpet), who wrote the famous composition “Work Song.” The rhythm section features a pianist, a bass player and a drummer. The concert, a showcase of lovely themes, with ballads as well as swing pieces, combines playfulness with fierce mastery of the genre. The diversity of tunes and performers makes for a show pleasing to both jazz experts and amateurs. Emilie Pons
