Summary:

In an era that gave us numerous giants of popular singing, Dionne Warwick emerged as one of the most distinctive and beloved of vocal stars. An exemplar of both pop and R&B, Warwick had a cool yet incredibly soulful sound that endeared her to music lovers throughout the 1960s and 70s. Captured here in 1964, Warwick was right on the cusp of international superstardom, enjoying the mega smash, "Walk On By." Her slinky look combined with her amazing vocal skills had the European audience eating out of her hand. Warwick’s name and fame is synonymous with the brilliant composer and producer Burt Bacharach who groomed her talents and provided most of her enduring classics. At this performance she turns in captivating renditions of Bacharach’s "Don’t Make Me Over" (the tune that brought her initial fame in 1962), "A House Is Not a Home" and her signature song, "Walk On By." On these wondrous performances we clearly hear Warwick’s unmistakable way with a song, her initial reserve turning to unleashed passion. Among the other numbers she charges the room with are the ballad "People" (made famous by Barbra Streisand) and "What’d I Say," the funky Ray Charles knees-up. It’s that R&B classic, so different in tempo and with a bluesy nature to which we normally associate with Warwick, that her deep roots in Gospel music are revealed. The woman had soul!
