- Summary:
- In the land of Soundiata Keita, griots (bards) are not the only repositories of Malian musical heritage. "At home in Wassoulou, we sing if we feel like it and if we have the gift for it." There, music doesn’t belong to anyone and musicians are compared to birds: free beings, messengers, symbols of love. But how do you live, or build a career, without being a griot? From Bougouni to Mopti, this documentary offers an overview of the practices and realities of Malian artists. We begin before the advent of the web, between exodus, system D and the quest for modernity; crossing paths with the balafons of sikasso along the way, the flutes and nomadic music of the Peul Shepherds, the Badéma Orchestra and the six-string blues of Ali Farka Touré.
