Summary:
Jamaica and its London musical counterpart made a major contribution to the rise of popular music at the end of the 20th century. Dub and its variants toasting and sound system music, both electronic extensions of reggae, had a huge impact on club culture, particularly with regards to remixing. Stepper music (a type of digital reggae) is the latest genre in this brilliant history, and has found a home in France with groups like High Tone, Zenzile and Stand High Patrol. On the bill at one of France's biggest music festivals Les Vieilles Charrues, the Breton sound system Stand High Patrol wastes no time unraveling a reverberating rhythmic framework. The bass is naturally at the fore, the rolling reggae beat is respected and the MC builds the pressure by interacting with the audience. At times verging on electro, Stand High Patrol's set also incorporates the subtle addition of a jazzy trumpet. As the group evolves, Jamaican culture remains at the center of what they do. This is evidenced by their tribute to singer Linval Thompson, complemented by a finely selected dubplate and some fitting commentary. Vincent Caffiaux
