- Summary:
- Dominique Fils-Aimé impressed us a few years ago with her splendid trilogy of blue, red and yellow albums, including Nameless, a vibrant tribute to Afro-American culture. With a penchant for jazz, but also influenced by other genres such as pop and soul (check out her cover of “Stand By Me,” the instant classic by the great Ben E. King), the Montreal-born composer also has an impeccable sense of arrangement and attention to detail. These qualities are key, allowing the charismatic performer to build a subtle and sincere body of work. Performing here alongside Franck O'Sullivan on guitar, David Osei-Afrifa on keyboards, Danny Trudeau on bass and Salin Cheewapansri on drums, the Canadian singer immerses us in her music. The lighting effects at Moods Club color each sequence and complement the different rhythms and moods. The slow passages are beautifully rendered, and the up-tempo tracks attest to the tightness of the ensemble. Sitting cross-legged for the first part of the set, Dominique Fils-Aimé gives pride of place to her ethereal melodies. “Love Take Over” is a real gem marked by a laid-back timbre. And the hopeful “Cheers To New Beginnings” demonstrates an impressive composition, simultaneously funky and meditative. Vincent Caffiaux
