Summary:
The Iberian Peninsula is rich in culture. All too often pigeon-holed as the birthplace of flamenco, this part of Europe also is also home to incredible genres such as the Celtic music of northern Spain, the rumba of Catalonia’s Roma and the bluesy emanations of Portuguese fado and its current variants. As a buffer zone between Europe and Africa, this vast expanse of land carries a significant history. One might think of the Arab-Andalusian heritage, for example, kept alive today by the sublime Ladino chants. Embodying this rich artistry, Manuel De Oliveira embraces a number of local elements in the project Iberia. At the crossroads of traditional music and jazz, this select line-up brings together a number of top names, including the incredible Jorge Pardo and Carles Benavent. Manuel De Oliveira's performance begins with a stunning track, building many bridges between styles. Ancestral chords fuel the spirit of improvisation, and the guest musicians play in perfect harmony. Admirably constructed, the tracks impose themselves with natural force, as exemplified by “Elixir Da Alma.” This particularly touching track offers an insight into this collective and the skill of its members: a must-see.
