- Summary:
- Renowned drummer Manu Katché first made a name for himself on the French Chanson scene accompanying the likes of Michel Jonasz and Laurent Voulzy. He then went on to garner international attention alongside a host of different groups and singers, starting with Peter Gabriel and his album So. Gifted with natural style, the French musician combines a solid drumming technique with an organic rhythm, far from the realm of deafening and heavy-handed effects. In this respect, his approach is close to that of The Police’s percussionist Stewart Copeland, but also of Topper Headon, the somewhat underrated drummer of the Clash. Here Manu Katché performs at the Jazz Sous Les Pommiers festival in Normandy, giving free rein to his compositions. The magic is immediately apparent with the evocative “Keep Connexion,” a number marked by an irresistible groove. The following tracks instill a particularly entrancing mood. Joined on stage by trumpeter Erik Truffaz, the versatile creator takes the audience on an innovative musical journey. Katché's impeccable style echoes the stripped-down playing of the Franco-Swiss musician. Finally, the arrival of singer Sandra Nkaké is a welcome addition; the Parisian performer concludes this set with an impressively powerful vocal performance to great effect. Highly recommended.
