Summary:

It was Norman Granz who developed the recipe of staging renowned artists from different generations and styles on the same bill. He did so for the so-called JATP concerts (named after the Philharmonic Auditorium where the first concert took place in 1944). Dizzy Gillespie, already at the top of his fame and without whom bebop would never have seen the light of day, is the oldest artist in this concert – at 43 years of age – while the other musicians are in their thirties (Getz is 32, Cannonball Adderley 31; the youngest being Argentinian pianist Lalo Schifrin who is 28 years old). With the subtleties of bop fully internalized, the young wolves begin to move towards different horizons. The proposed concert, which is more sumptuous than a mere jam session showcases the Adderley brothers' jazz-funk tendency and the beautiful outfits of trombonist J.J. Johnson and Stan Getz, who was then considered the best tenor saxophonist in the world by specialized American magazines and who had developed a taste for bossa nova. Undeniably the highlight of the evening is Dizzy Gillespie’s quintet, which immediately brings a Latin atmosphere to proceedings. Lalo Schifrin, known for his film music (Mannix, Mission Impossible … ), was an ideal accompanist that day for the man with the bent trumpet. Philippe Lesage
