- Summary:
- Steve Coleman, who is used to compositions that combine numerology, astrology, symbolism, and Cuban syncopations, further complicates matters with this creation, Lingua Franca, presented in 2011 at the Sons d'Hiver festival in the Paris region. While the saxophonist's vocabulary is based on the layering of rhythmic patterns, he modifies the structure of his Five Elements by glossing over the rhythm to recruit the always radical flutist, Nicole Mitchell, as well as singers Jen Shyu (a regular) and Sarah Buechi. Jonathan Finlayson (trumpet) and Miles Okazaki (guitar) complete an arc in which arid landscapes are painted, which can disconcert or bewitch depending on whether or not you let yourself drift into a trance state. As always with Coleman, and more than ever with this project, you have to make an effort to find an opening; the payoff is on the other side. Eric Delhaye
