Summary:
Driss El Maloumi embodies the cultural richness of the Maghreb. Originally from Agadir, the large seaside town on the Atlantic, the singer and oud player is also an ambassador for the North African Berber culture. As a member of the 3 MA collective alongside Madagascan valiha virtuoso Rajery and Malian master of the kora Ballaké Sissoko, Driss El Maloumi takes his fascinating musical repertoire around the world. Never lacking in stage chat, this virtuoso is also a fine teacher who invites his audiences to travel alongside him. Performing at the Moods Club, a Swiss venue deeply intertwined with Zurich's cultural life, Maloumi presents the oud in all its glory. Full of melodies that are sometimes so lively they recall certain aspects of Arab-Andalusian music, his set has an undeniably human touch. The influence of Jordi Savall is evident here, a leading viola da gamba player and composer who the Moroccan musician has worked with in the past. Surrounded by two fabulous percussionists, including a master of the darbouka and a leading zarb player, an instrument that originated in Persia, the soloist bypasses the accompaniment status often assigned to percussion instruments by fully integrating them into a track whose title “Équilibre” (“Equilibrium” in English) is a fitting description.
