- Summary:
- There's an undeniable breath of fresh air blowing through jazz at the beginning of this third millennium. Partly responsible for this is the British scene and its breaking down of barriers and prejudices, as well as the young pioneering French ensembles setting the pace by sending signals out into the realms of electronic and dance music, and, finally, artistic havens such as Eastern Europe and Switzerland. Geneva-born Louis Matute embodies this revival, as illustrated by his project Large Ensemble. In this performance at Zurich's Moods Club, marked by an adventurous spirit that recalls that of saxophonist Léon Phal, Louis Matute reveals a diverse range of influences ranging from Afro-Latin music to jazz-rock. A former pupil of the great Lionel Loueke, this inspired musician transcends these ingredients. Proving the theory that talent is not dependent on age, the Helvetian guitarist and his band impress with the maturity of their scores. Impressionist moods alternate with more formal atmospheres, and the group’s collaborative identity is no empty gesture; the flawless track “Kawira,” for example, is dedicated to their Kenyan illustrator. Rounding off the set, the final improvisation showcases the astounding virtuosity of this promising young guitarist. Vincent Caffiaux
