- Summary:
- The music of Mali comprises an immense territory, an abundance of cultures, and, overall, a unique artistic landscape. The diversity of the country's music is reflected in its many stars, including the incredible Kandia Kouyaté and the Tamasheq (Tuareg) rockers Tinariwen. Boubacar Traoré, a major composer and performer, is indissociable from the country’s independence period. Influenced by pentatonic scales and the blues, he began his career in the 60s along the Senegal River (the parallel with the Mississippi is tempting) before moving to Europe, where he was widely acclaimed for albums including Mariama and Kongo Magni. Now in his eighties, the musician delivers a set at Zurich’s Moods Club that is as authentic as it gets. Backed by Vincent Bucher on harmonica and Jérémie Diarra on percussion, the Kayes-born musician mixes oral tradition with the spirit of evening gatherings in a series of beautiful acoustic arrangements. The first track sets the scene with a particularly poignant atmosphere, a number of the bridges feature a delicate dialogue between the guitar and the harmonica, and Traoré reveals his impressive vocal range, both in local dialects and French. Fascinating and hypnotic, this intimate show offers a journey to the frontiers of poetry and age-old traditions: highly recommended! Vincent Caffiaux
