Summary:
Trumpeter Stéphane Belmondo returns to his hard bop first loves by appropriating Horace Silver's optimistic, colorful jazz. In 1963, Silver released *Song for My Father*, an album also subtitled "Cantiga para meu pai" in Portuguese as a tribute to his father, a Cape Verdean immigrant. So it is not surprising to find Jorge Bezerra Jr. here. The creative percussionist gives the concert an African soul, among other things, with an animist song in Portuguese (he sings "Exu-Rei"). Since the quintet chooses to value harmonic rather than melodic approaches, it has an unexpected repertoire, often beautiful ballads. We may be surprised by the absence of "Song for My Father," but the swaying "Blowin' the Blues Away" reestablishes the connection with our memories of Horace Silver's aesthetic. We appreciate pianist Kirk Lightsey's finesse. Philippe Lesage
