Summary:
The incomparable bassist Dave Holland has always had the uncanny knack of assembling top notch bands. The late 80’s ensemble that united the esteemed British trumpeter Kenny Wheeler with three young American upstarts–the alto saxophonist Steve Coleman, the trombonist Robin Eubanks and the drummer Marvin "Smitty" Smith–may have been his most accomplished group. A brilliant mesh of forward thinking players, this energized quintet brought out the best in each of these adventurous musicians. By the time he began leading his own bands, Holland had already established himself as one of the most technically adept and imaginative bassists in jazz, having proved his worth with such legendary figures as Miles Davis, Anthony Braxton, Stan Getz and Sam Rivers, among others. With the 1973 release of his ECM Records masterpiece *Conference of the Birds*, Holland also distinguished himself as a distinctive composer. By 1983 he was finally ready to step into the role of bandleader. As impressive as Holland’s quintet was on recordings, it fully came alive on stage, as this scintillating concert makes clear. The younger players are particularly explosive in both their energy and their invention. Coleman, Eubanks and Smith were all important members of the New York-based M-Base collective, which encouraged new musical ideas for jazz. And while they were from a different musical generation than the other band members, Holland and Wheeler blend seamlessly with them. Holland’s extraordinary virtuosity and Wheeler’s fertile improvising are of a piece with the exuberance and creativity of the fearsome Coleman, Eubanks and Smith. This indeed was a band for the ages!
