Summary:
The last quarter-hour of this beautiful concert, in all its softness and nuance, encapsulates both David Virelles' art as a solo pianist and his distanced reading of popular Cuban trio rhythms. A true wellspring of knowledge, Cuban pianist David Virelles was born in 1983 and emigrated to the USA in 2003. Within an atmosphere of delicate chamber music where everything seems more suggested than imposed, David Virelles reveals his breathtaking technique, sculpting silences and effortlessly controlling nuance, dynamic and timbre. He explores the full range of his influences throughout the two sets, from Cuban reminiscences – where melodies are alluded to or twisted in some way – to the most contemporary approaches. The concert’s musical repertoire revolves around that of his latest album, Carta (Intakt Records), recorded with the excellent drummer Eric Mc Pherson and double bassist Ben Street, who was substituted for this concert by Vicente Archer. One might have expected him to cite the names of Ernesto Lecuona, Gonzalo Roig, Sindo Garay or Israel Lopez as Cuban references, but the names he puts forward are those of the Chepin Choven Orquesta and, above all, Enrique Bonne Castillo; a composer born in 1926 and originally from Santiago de Cuba, like Virelles himself.
