Summary:
For this 2018 performance at the Moods Jazz Club, two distinct voices combine for a night of beautiful, experimental and politicized dialogue. Murray is one of jazz’ great tenor saxophonists – always energetic, muscular and demanding to be heard. Saul Williams is equally hard-hitting: unclassifiable but essential to the New York music scene, the poet and performer cuts as deeply as any instrument through his voice, matching the intricacy and the expression of his accompanists through his handling of rhythm and tone in the delivery. They are joined by Nasheet Waits, a virtuoso drummer (and also band leader) whose music is always expressly reflective of his own spirituality, and of the principle of combining tradition and modernity. Also taking to the stage his pianist Orrin Evans, known for his open and inclusive recording sessions as well as for *The Evolution of Oneself*, an album recorded alongside Christian McBride, amongst others. Next, bassist Jaribu Shahid completes the group, a former sideman of Sun Ra and part of the avant-garde mythical collective, The Art Ensemble of Chicago. Together, they conjure a feast for the senses. When the rhythm kicks into gear, Murray’s sax awakens and links with William’s densely packed, impactful words, it is bound to grab and to challenge you. Rowan Standish Hayes
