- Summary:
- Shai Maestro is no small name in the music world. Trained on the prestigious Berklee music campus in Boston, the pianist went on to fine-tune his practice alongside Avishai Cohen, both on stage and in the recording studio. This is particularly evidenced by his contribution to the Israeli double bassist’s remarkable album Seven Seas. His personal discography is just as impressive, gaining worldwide recognition with The Dream Thief and Human, two albums signed to Manfred Eicher’s German label ECM. Recorded in 2021 at the Cité de la Musique in Paris during the Jazz à La Villette festival, Shai Maestro's new album is a fine example of his savoir-faire. Backed by Jorge Roeder on bass, Ofri Nehemya on drums and Philip Dizack on trumpet, the composer kicks off his set with “The Queen,” a track full of twists and turns featuring poignant piano parts. Another highlight is “Neta,” which showcases the fantastic osmosis between the band's rhythmic and melodic elements. Finally, the powerful “Mystery and Illusions” brings this short but intense performance to a close, marked by some breathtaking brass melodies. Vincent Caffiaux
