- Summary:
- Warning, serious flames ahead! It was at the peak of her late career, and only two years before her sudden death (2016), that singer Sharon Jones, accompanied by her faithful Dap-Kings in full regalia, set fire to a sold-out Olympia venue. Headlining on the New York label Daptone Records, a key figure in the soul/funk revival observed over the last fifteen years, Sharon Jones reminds us that she was an outstanding artist in her own right, both on stage and on record. Original compositions are matched by rye observation in forming her repertoire. Another Queen of Soul, she knows how to steer from the poignant moments into lighter ones, where she can be funny, and then into the groove, where she expertly controls the pace and tone with complete efficiency. Moreover, her very personal and totally revisited version of Marvin Gaye's classic (I Heard It Through The Grapevine) is a perfect illustration of her character and versatility. With ten musicians who have the codes of the genre at their fingertips (tensions, relaxations, breaks, medleys, choruses, tempo variations ...), this concert sustains the great tradition of the "soul revues" of the sixties. Full of surprises, impeccably cut costumes, flamboyant soloists and nods to a golden age that is still firmly rooted in the minds of many. Soul, funk, rhythm & blues and even some infectious dance lessons are delivered with the class and humor that characterized this great figure of Afro-American music. Julien D.
