Summary:

Some festivals stand out for their beauty, and Cosmo Jazz is undoubtedly one of them. Launched by pianist André Manoukian, the festival hosts a multitude of groups and performers in some amazing natural locations, in this case the Chamonix valley and the Mont Blanc massif. Known for its selective lineup (including remarkable sets from its Swiss neighbors the Orchestre Tout Puissant Marcel Duchamp and American double bassist Kyle Eastwood), the festival has a family atmosphere, setting it apart from the excessiveness associated with many summer events. Originally from Malawi, a small country in southeastern Africa, Madalitso Band fits the setting perfectly. Yosefe Kalekeni and Yobu Malingwa, two artists scouted by Bongo Joe in Geneva, perform an acoustic session. The melodies are impeccably clean, and the arrangements perfectly in tune with the vocals. At times hypnotic, the tandem lend themselves to a certain lyricism. Their performance is also occasionally reminiscent of the late Geoffrey Oryema, a Ugandan-born musician renowned for his celestial works, as well as Stella Chiweshe, ambassador of Shona culture and mbira virtuoso. At once pastoral and mystical, this acoustic repertoire is enhanced by the performers’ proximity to the audience. Located in a hamlet called Les Montuires, the crowd is quick to join in the show and start dancing, much to the musicians’ delight. Vincent Caffiaux
