Summary:
While Hannah Williams’ bawdy-soul vocalizing takes centerstage in The Affirmation, the high-charged Bristol, UK, sextet fuels the retro-soul and rock that has elevated it to the must-see zone. Even Jay-Z has taken notice and collected samples for his own works. At this energetic 2018 show presented by the Moods Jazz Association in Zurich, the band delivers a smart set with Williams digging deep into lightning grooves, funky swings and anguished complaints with an Afro-pop touch. What’s impressive is the fluidity of vocal support by Hannah Nicholson and Victoria Klewin who sometimes join in with Williams through the lead lines and at other times shade the dance as a perfectly in-sync choir. Equally noteworthy is keyboardist James Graham who leads the band on a jazz instrumental stretch midway through. He also writes many of the songs, including a "super special" moving piece for family members who tragically passed. Williams brings the emotion and the grace. She’s also emboldened in her castigation of social injustice related to immigration and financial inequality, best witnessed on the hand-clapping "It Ain’t Enough" where she sings with fire: "Before you choose, take a look at yourself/Is it peace that you want or more about wealth/Lining your pockets, pull the wool over our eyes/Get rich from selling weapons and watch the innocents die." Her adoring fans at this show agree. Dan Ouellette
