- Summary:
- While the London group Morcheeba has undergone several "reshuffles" since its creation in 1995 – the singer Skye Edwards left the project in 2003 only to be drawn back seven years later – this configuration seems to be one of their most accomplished; the blood-ties make it so. Indeed, the musicians complicity is rooted in family. Edwards is accompanied by her husband Steve Gordon on bass and by her son Jaega Mckenna-Gordon on drums. She makes for a natural leader of the group, as demonstrated by this 2018 concert filmed at the Vienna Jazz Festival. The group’s DNA is found in Edward’s voice, and she knows it. Playing with her natural vocal sensibility, she is as comfortable covering David Bowie's "Let's Dance" as she is performing songs from their album Blaze Away, released around the same time as the concert, in trip hop, R&B and pop registers. With her long pink dress flying behind her, she asks the audience to join in with their phone torches for one of the last songs of the set. They oblige, and though batteries begin to die, the result is poetic; magnified by the beauty of the impressive sold-out arena in Vienna. Floriane Esnault
