- Summary:
- Following the revival of klezmer music and Balkan village ensembles, today it’s the turn of Turkish folk music to take center stage in the international music scene. Whether based in Israel, as is the case for the Satellites, or in the Netherlands like the irresistible Altin Gün, these electric formations draw from the fertile ground of Anatolia by way of a striking psychedelic genre known as Anatolian pop. Derya Yildirim, a leading member of this revival movement, is renowned for the quality of her work. In her performance at Moods Club alongside Grup Simsek, she draws on the multiple facets of her career. Yildrim, whose career has been bolstered in no small measure by the Genevan record shop and label Bongo Joe, hits her stride in no time. The opening track of the set, carried by a hypnotic rhythm and lysergic keyboards, encapsulates this dynamic energy. The following melody and its baglama chords (produced by a long-necked lute also known as a saz) infuse the concert with a multisecular touch to great effect. Varied yet admirably arranged, musical genres like rock, jazz and funk merge with the rich tapestry of Middle Eastern heritage. This is the case with the final track, an enchanting sequence where the remarkable German-Turkish artist’s vocals take the spotlight. Vincent Caffiaux
