Summary:
During his term as artistic director, Daniel Yvinec liked to explore the field of confrontation. He took the National Jazz Orchestra into Robert Wyatt and Astor Piazzolla territory. With Shut Up and Dance! (Shut up and dance!), he weaves interactions between dance and music through the inclusion of Spanish choreographer Blanca Li who illustrates some of the compositions by American drummer John Hollenbeck. Who better than a drummer, someone who shuffles like a dancer above his drums, to answer the challenge of designing rhythmic themes and shapes through movement? In addition to Life Still, where reptilian body language is a symbol of life in gestation, Praya Dance is worth mentioning. In this long and magnificent piece where everything becomes percussion and where the ONJ members happily lend themselves to the interplay of sound processing, repetitive and electronic music forming a two step routine. Philippe Lesage
