Summary:
Few groups can rival The Crusaders when they put their virtuosity to work for the sake of groove. This Swiss concert from the 1987 Lugano Estival Jazz festival comes rather late in the history of the group, which was founded in Houston in the fifties. Originally known under the name "The Jazz Crusaders" during their hard bop period, they shortened their name in 1971, when they adopted a jazz-funk style, incorporating an electric guitar and bass guitar into their music. Street Life, sung by Randy Crawford on the 1979 album of the same name, was one of their biggest successes, resurrected twenty years later in the soundtrack of the Quentin Tarantino film Jackie Brown. The hit—covered by Reichii Guillory—is part of the repertoire of this concert, drawn from the ample discography accumulated by pianist Joe Sample and saxophonist Wilton Felder, cofounders of the group (along with drummer Stix Hooper and trombonist Wayne Henderson). Driven by an enthusiastic audience, the musicians kick it into high gear. In two titles excerpted from his solo albums, Carmel (*Carmel*, 1979) and Blue Ballet (*The Hunter*, 1982), Joe Sample gives a full demonstration, breezing through jazz in all its forms—from swing to funk—in a single movement. The following decades were punctuated by departures and reunions. In 2010, The Crusaders came together one last time for a reunion tour. But the successive deaths of Joe Sample (2014) and Wilton Felder (2015) saw an end to their distinguished history, which is captured brilliantly in this concert. Eric Delhaye
