- Summary:
- Recently featured in Léon Phal's electro-jazz sessions, Gauthier Toux has had a brilliant career so far. With a solid musical background, the French keyboardist quickly won critical acclaim, notably as part of a trio. He has performed at some of Europe's finest festivals, including the Copenhagen Jazz Festival (Denmark has long played host to American jazzmen). The composer also has an obvious penchant for collaboration, as attested to by this set at Jazz Sous Les Pommiers festival in Normandy. The album For A Word, born out of an artist residency, is subtly presented here. The vocals are bold, electronic effects complement the tracks in a unique way, and the drums carry the performance with force. Invited on stage by Toux, Nils Petter Molvær delivers some sublime, ethereal sequences of his own. The Norwegian trumpeter, used to working with DJs, beatmakers and rappers, unleashes his creativity with the tracks in this set. “From One Life to Another” is the highlight, instilling a captivating atmosphere. This timelessly resonant piece is exquisitely crafted and transports the audience to a whole different realm. Highly recommended! Vincent Caffiaux
