Summary:
A pioneering 90s British rock group, Skunk Anansie's penchant for funk, punk and metal fusion encapsulates that musical era. Led by the charismatic Skin, the band soaked up a host of other rhythmic influences including reggae over the years, becoming a matrix of contemporary musical trends. A benchmark of creativity, the group has enjoyed success with various singles and albums; some of which have gone platinum, cementing their place in the great British popular music tradition. Skunk Anansie kick off their concert at the Vieilles Charrues festival in Brittany with an explosive sequence of breakbeats and electronic bleeps. After this powerful introduction, the band transition from track to track at impressive speed. Skin's voice shines through in each musical creation, and imposing guitar riffs slash through and fill the space. Electronic effects complete the group’s sound, adding an element of surprise. “The Skank Heads” is a particularly characteristic track, bringing all of these different elements together. The same can be said for the band’s performance of “Highway to Hell,” the rock anthem by AC/DC that makes an appearance during the encore, much to the delight of the festival-goers in Carhaix that evening. Vincent Caffiaux
