- Summary:
- In 1994, two years before the Buena Vista Social Club's famous gathering, other Cuban purveyors of sound were busy resuming normal service. The idea came from Mario Carcassés Amabile when, after retiring from his profession as a butcher, he approached his friend Juan Gualberto "Bebeto" Ferrer: "Hey, Bebeto! We're going to start a group, so that we're not sitting around and brooding all day, and so that we'll remember the good times." Consequently, the two singers - both born in 1925 - founded Los Jubilados (The Retired), whose story is the subject of this documentary. From the streets of Santiago de Cuba to the casino in Biarritz, they abuse French wine before beginning a collaboration with the Panamanian salsero Azuquita. It's a magnificent film showcasing the sheer energy of Los Jubilados as they express their pride in perpetuating their culture: "We will die playing Cuban sound and we will have passed it on to future generations." Eric Delhaye
