- Summary:
- In this 10-part series' eposode devoted to New York musicians, Gerald Clayton recalls how he officially began his life as a New Yorker in the year 2007. Having grown up in California, the pianist followed the dream of many a jazz artist: to make a name for himself in New York. He confides that, in part, living there means getting used to the idea of failing, picking up the pieces and getting back on track. We see him wandering the streets of New York, striking a pose in front of the Village Vanguard, playing in a duo with saxophonist Dayna Stephens at Smalls and monkeying around on his grand piano at home. It’s in this context of day-to-day life that the pianist finds his inspiration. He explains how his personal journey goes beyond music, leading him to express himself honestly, clearly and peacefully, growing as a musician and a human being at the same time. In addition to having played piano as a supporting artist for such stars as Diana Krall, Roy Hargrove, Kendrick Scott, Ambrose Akinmusire, Peter Bernstein and, more recently, Charles Lloyd, Clayton is also a composer whose career, at the time of filming this documentary in 2017, already included four albums under his name. Two of these (The Paris Sessions in 2011 and Life Forum in 2013) even earned him Grammy nominations! Journalist Ashley Kahn calls him "very creative" and affirms that he has become a true New Yorker. The musicians who collaborate with him in his projects consistently represent the best of the best from the Big Apple: Justin Brown, Ben Wendel, Joe Sanders (now a Parisian), etc. All sidemen who have become eminent leaders, just like Clayton.
