- Summary:
- Some jazzmen leave behind a lasting impression. Less famous than Duke Ellington or Thelonious Monk, who was a key influence on him, the American pianist Mal Waldron nonetheless did it all. To pick a few highlights, he appeared on sets with Billie Holiday and Abbey Lincoln, on film soundtracks – including one with the renowned Martial Solal (thanks to Jean-Luc Godard) – and composed the German label ECM’s first record, Free at Last. Here Mal Waldron performs an impressive show at New York's Village Vanguard, illustrated by photos of Afro-American musicians. Bringing together big names – saxophonist Charles Rouse, double bassist Reggie Workman, drummer Ed Blackwell and trumpeter Woody Shaw – Waldron performs a succession of tracks with a cubist edge. The quintet’s immaculate playing makes for an incredibly beautiful piece of music. The tracks are played in perfect unison, showcasing Woody Shaw's talent as an arranger, Reggie Workman's organic touch and, of course, Mal Waldron's sublime chords. Above all, this captivating concert evokes the artistic dimension and evolving nature of jazz: an aesthetic revolution in itself. Vincent Caffiaux
