- Summary:
- Following one of Mali's most popular female singers, ethnomusicologist Henri Lecomte takes us to the heart of the musical tradition of Wassoulou, in the south of the country. Nahawa Doumbia has taken up the torch passed down by her mother, and speaks Bambara. The documentary traces her journey from her home village to the Christmas night of the 1996 Africolor Festival, via Bamako. It crosses the local practices of hunters and farmers, traditional dances and the instruments that accompany these rhythms: Ngoni, Kora, drums and balafons. The tone is set from the very first song, whose lyrics are subtitled. They advocate respect for the elders, the land, the trees and tradition, as well as the indispensable struggle against everything that can destroy African culture: fire, Western influence, corruption. The singer knows how to play with modernity. Marion Paoli
