Summary:
Initially discovered by Renaud Barret and Florent De La Tullaye in the documentary Jupiter’s Dance, then promoted by Damon Albarn during the incredible Africa Express tour in the UK, Jupiter Bokondji is a major force in today’s booming Congolese music scene. Recorded during the Africolor festival in December 2022, at Espace 93 in the Parisian suburb of Clichy-sous-Bois, the charismatic Kinois singer delivers an undeniably powerful performance. A contemporary of Staff Benda Bilili and the tradi-modern experiments of Konono N°1 (the various sessions of these percussionists are still available on the impeccable Crammed label), Jupiter enriches ambient repertoires with various electronic inputs. Backed by Okwess, a powerful and exceptionally tight group, Jupiter attacks head-on with “Ofakombolo,” a track brimming with intoxicating riffs; follows this with “Musonsu,” a song with reggae accents accompanied by Montana Kinunu’s scansion; and rounds it all off with “Nzele Momi,” a funky and infectious rhythm that propels some of the audience to the stage. A soundtrack to the African megalopolises at the dawn of the third millennium, coupled with an extraordinary dance machine, this set from Jupiter & Okwess remains attuned to the sophistication of the genres it tackles. A case in point is the excellent “Tabasco Mascao (Mexico),” an astonishing melody that powerfully blends Latin-American sounds with the guitar chords so dear to the emblematic Congolese rumba: great art… Vincent Caffiaux
