Summary:
First shot for the Office de radiodiffusion-télévision française (ORTF), this concert by James Brown is eminently exciting. First of all because the 1966 performance naturally echoes the release of the visionary "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag." Secondly, because the set offered that evening sums up the incandescence of homemade shows. Faced with an Olympia venue full to the brim (there is a certain Serge Gainsbourg in attendance, always on the lookout for new sounds), the King Of Soul demonstrates his winning formula. Led by the brass section of the Famous Flames, the hypnotic "Out Of Sight" already prefigures urban syncopations, whether funk, rap or afrobeat. "I Got You (I Feel Good)" raises the temperature a few degrees with choreography that seriously borders on perfection. And the expiatory "Please, Please, Please" unveils a James Brown in the middle of a rhythm and blues liturgy, the tone imploring and the knees flopping straight to the ground. Incidentally, Mister Dynamite would later return to the Boulevard des Capucines stage and would even record an album there. But that's another story ... Vincent Caffiaux
